Although the Mattel versions of football were first on the market and were probably more popular I have intense nostalgic memories of the Coleco Head to Head. My brother picked one up at a flea market or yard sale in the mid 80's and I guess he got bored with it quickly because he gave it to me. I remember playing that thing for hours and hours and just really being drawn to the simple yet addictive game play. Despite the fact that it was a two player handheld my brother and I rarely got into football battles together so I was generally left to playing it against the computer. When we did however play against each other it was always incredibly fun until my brother would lose and then toss the device across the room in disgust. Somehow he never broke the thing (Coleco makes sturdy stuff) and for years and years I played epic battles of bleeps and bloops. My favorite feature of the device was the fact that you could not only have a fun running game but you also have the ability to pass the ball as well. By the time I got a Nintendo however I discovered video game football and my Head to Head was forced to languish in a box until it eventually became lost over time.
Several months ago I was feeling nostalgic for that long forgotten relic of my gaming past and so I decided to try and find one. I went on Game Gavel and over the course of a few months kept checking to see if one would appear. I know that they are plentiful on Ebay but I simply refuse to use Ebay. Eventually a Mattel football I appeared for sale from the Great Socal Mike himself and so I went for it. It wasn't Coleco head to head but I thought what the heck I'm sure it's just as good. I purchased the Mattel version and within a few weeks it was in my hands. It was in pristine shape, clean as a whistle and even included the instruction manual. Although the Mattel version is very fun it just did not quite capture the same intense nostalgia that the Coleco version did. So a few months later I asked a certain nutty friend of mine to be on the look out for one and sure enough within the month he was able to locate one in decent shape and for a cheap price. Although I still play the Mattel version from time to time because of Nostalgia I always go back to the one made by Coleco.
I'm curious if anyone on this forum also remembers Coleco Head To Head Football. What do you think is the best electronic red Led football game ever made?
